The focus is on allusions which previous scholarship has identified in Josephus’ most significant works, Bellum Judaicum and Antiquitates Judaicae. MA Dissertation: Flavius Josephus and Greek Tragedy The thesis analyses Josephus’ allusions to the three Attic tragedians, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. In short, this article offers a detailed account of the various ways in which this early modern polyglot used the Greek language. Furthermore, Huygens demonstrates his knowledge and love of the Greek language in coining Greek neologisms and in the range of books in or about Greek in his library. The Greek author whose work Huygens quotes most often in his correspondence and in the margins of his Dutch poems is Euripides, although he also quotes extensively from other classical authors, the New Testament and Church Fathers. He code switches from Latin into Greek for many reasons, which often mirror those behind the code switching of classical authors such as Cicero. However, it is in code switching and the use of quotations in the margins of his Dutch poems, in the manner of commonplace books, that Huygens really demonstrates his knowledge of Greek and of the literature written in the language.

We have several poems and two letters that Huygens wrote in Greek, although we know that he wrote other Greek poems. In this article I consider what we know about Huygens’ education in Greek and the various ways in which he used his knowledge of the language.

His father, who had been a secretary to William of Orange, ensured that Constantijn received a thorough education in Latin and Greek. Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) was educated in order to become an administrator in the Dutch Republic.
